Cumnor , England

URPoint Details

An interesting village with an unusual link to Robert Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I, in that Amy Robsart, wife of Robert was found dead in their house Cumnor Place. Did she fall or was she pushed?
This happened at a period in history when Robert Dudley was trying to woo the queen. There is nothing left of the building but the story is kept alive by the monuments in the church.

The village with its stone houses has a Cotswold atmosphere and if you climb the hills there are magnificent views over the Dreaming Spires of Oxford.

The church has 17th century spiral staircase and is mainly in the Decorated style. The tower is late 12th early 13th century and the north arcade is Early English. Inside the church are a statue of Queen Elizabeth 1 and some of Amy Robsart’s letters. At the time of her death she was staying with one of Robert Dudley’s retainers, Anthony Forster, whose magnificent tomb is dated 1572.
