The village once had its own market and fair when Charles I stayed before the Battle of Cropredy Bridge. In the 18th century the Culworth Gang, an infamous gang of thieves used the village as its headquarters.
The church has a tombstone of a Negro slave who died in 1762 at the age of 16.
