Tearoom is Bessie Bar Hall, open: April to September, daily 10.30am-4.30pm. Small disabled parking area at Town House. Town House access has level access to main part of exhibition including audio-visual presentation 12 steep steps with banister to upper floor. Study: steep spiral staircase to entry point. Palace: access to ground floor only upper floors are by spiral staircase or steep stone steps without banisters. Toilets in car park.
This small royal burgh on the north shore of the Forth provides a striking introduction to Scottish domestic life in the 16th and 17th centuries. Culross was then a thriving community, trading in coal and salt. Developed under the businesslike laird, Sir George Bruce, these provided a flourishing sea-going trade with other Forth ports and the Low Countries.
The Palace, built between 1597 and 1611 for Sir George, features decorative painted woodwork and original interiors. Extensive renovation work has recently been completed and the rooms in both the west and north buildings are furnished appropriately with 17th and 18th century furniture and decorative items.
