On a clifftop, south of the town is the ruined Cruggleton Castle, the site of what is believed to have been fortified by the Norsemen.
The early Norman church was restored in the 19th century by the Marquess of Bute is the most complete Romanesque church in the region, with its original chancel arch, partly reset.
