URPoint Details
The most historic building in Croydon was the Palace, the summer residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury from Norman times until the middle of the 18th century. Only the Norman undercroft, 15th century banqueting hall, the entrance porch from the churchyard, and the guard room remain. There are still some Tudor remains including the seven windows in the chapel with their typical Tudor arches.
The church of St John the Evangelist is the largest parish church in Surrey, although much destroyed by fire in 1867 was restored in the 1880s. The tower and the brass eagle lectern date from the 15th century.
