URPoint Details
Lying in the vale of the River Yarrow, the Old English name means ‘Town of the Cross’, commemorating the 7th century wayside cross that was used by the Celtic missionaries, although the cross no longer remains.
The late-Gothic Church of St Michael has a fine stained glass window over the studded north door.
On one side of the church is a small cloister, on the other, the school founded in 1372 by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.
