Cromford

Cromford , England

URPoint Details

The village of Cromford boasts not only a legacy from the local lead mining industry but also a wealth of heritage from the textile industry. This is well interpreted by the Arkwright Society at Cromford Mill.

The Old Corn Mill and Dam and ponds are still the focal point of the village, and the mill wheel can still be seen turning.

A row of houses and school situated on the South side of the Wirksworth road, is a fine example of the provision made by Arkwright for his workers.

Cromford Sough, from Cromford school at the end of North street it is a short walk, over a stile, on the left of the school, to the sough. This was a drain to remove water from the surrounding lead mines. This water was also harnessed by Arkwright to help power his mills.

Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill. Progressive restoration of world's first successful water powered cotton spinning mill built by Richard Arkwright in 1771.
