URPoint Details
A large pleasant village at a natural crossing of the river Yare, and the most picturesque part is around the attractive bridge.
The medieval core of the bridge and its later additions, replaced a timber bridge washed away during a disastrous flood in 1519.
Queen Elizabeth I would have passed over this bridge on her visit to Norwich and the Duke of Norfolk, and Robert Kett and his men on their march to Norwich in 1549.
St Peter’s church stands on a rise above the river contains Saxon remains including small double-splayed windows and the remains of a finely decorated cross now built into the fabric.
