The town has seen Roman and Saxon residents and where the wide street has some fine 17th and 18th century houses and is the only town in Wiltshire to sit beside the River Thames.
Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee clock-tower has a pendulum that swings in water.
The church is dedicated to St Sampson and has a cathedral-like turreted tower built by the Duke of Northumberland in 1553.
