URPoint Details
A large sophisticated castle, of which the most spectacular part is the range erected by the Earl of Bothwell between 1581 and 1591.
The 14th to 16th century castle has an interesting north wing in an Italianate style.
The castle had one tower originally but later developed into a three-sided enclosure and finally the north wing was added.
The dungeon is known as ‘Massie More’.
The castle was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1562.
