Known as St Boniface one of the first Christian preachers was born here in AD674 as Winfrith. Crediton and was the seat to the first Bishop of Devon and Cornwall.

Many town buildings were destroyed by fire in both 1743 and 1769.

The Church of the Holy Cross is a former Collegiate church in a cruciform style with a tower over the crossing of the original 12th century building. A lady Chapel was added , there is a Norman font and some fine monuments.
