URPoint Details

The first record of Cranfield (the Cranfeldga) was in AD918, when Ailwin Niger granted a manor at Cranfield to the monks of Ramsey Abbey in Cambridgeshire/Huntingdonshire. The manor was held by the abbey until 1539 when, on dissolution of the monasteries, it reverted to the Crown. The name means clearing of the forest occupied by cranes. The first stone church was built in the middle of the 12th century. Prior to this there was a wooden and thatched building built by the monks of Ramsey Abbey.

The present clock on the church tower was installed in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee.
