Cranborne Chase

Cranborne , England

URPoint Details

The Chase once covered over 100 square miles and was the long southern slope of the chalk massif which lies between Shaftesbury and Salisbury, where fallow deer and red deer were introduced but did not like the chalk lands.

In the Middle Ages the hunting rights passed from the Earls of Gloucester to the Earls of Shaftesbury and then to the Pitt-Rivers family.

The road from Shaftesbury to Sixpenny Handley offers great views of grassland and fine beech trees.
