URPoint Details
The village sits on the edge of the rolling chalk uplands, Cranborne Chase, one of the great medieval forests.
Several monarchs including King John and James I hunted in the forest and for centuries the woodland was governed by Cranborne Chase Court.
There are narrow streets with several twisting by-ways and is lined with red-brick and timber houses and colour-washed cottages.
The Church of St Mary the Virgin was originally attached to a 10th century Benedictine abbey, the oldest section still remaining is the Norman doorway in the north porch, retained when the church was rebuilt in the 13th century. The church has a fine barrel roof, a finely carved medieval oak pulpit. In the south wall there is a late Victorian window.
