URPoint Details
Consecrated on the 25th May 1962, the new cathedral stands by the ruins of the bombed St Michael’s to symbolise death and regeneration.
It was designed by Sir Basil Spence and is a magnificent example of contemporary architecture.
John Piper’s Baptistry window, John Hutton’s engraved glass screen and Epstein’s statue of St Michael and the Devil all complement Graham Sutherland’s avant-garde tapestry which is thought to be the largest in the world.
