Lady Godiva is reputed to have ridden naked through the Saxon settlement, and the scene is re-enacted hourly on the clock in the arch over Hanover Street.
Many fine buildings were destroyed on the 14th November 1940 when a single air-raid levelled most of the city. The city was rebuilt complete with a new cathedral that has become one of the great sights as it stands alongside the ruins of the old.
A wooden cross, created out of the charred timbers stands on the original altar bearing the inscription ‘Father Forgive’.
In Hertford Street is an effigy of ‘Peeping Tom’ looking down.
