An impressive central gatehouse dating from 1530 with an Elizabethan half-timbered courtyard.
During the Civil War this mainly Elizabethan house was attacked by both Parliamentary and Royalist forces. It has important connections with the Gunpowder Plot and contains priests' hiding places.
The contents of the gatehouse and South Wing include some notable furniture, porcelain, portraits and memorabilia of Throckmorton family who have lived here since 1409.

There are also two churches, a tranquil lake, riverside walk and formal gardens, Gunpowder Plot and children's clothes exhibition.
