URPoint Details
When Henry III gave Saxthorpe to his half-brother William de Valence, the village passed from the crown into the ownership of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the country.
Aylmer de Valence’s residence was Mickle Hall. He founded a chapel to St Dunstan around 1315 which had its own chaplain.
Aylmer de Valaence gave part of his estate to Simon de Creping, who built a large moated manor, Lound Hall, near the Briston road.
Both Lound Hall and Mickle Hall eventually came into single ownership and in the 17th century were bought by the Earle family of Heydon, who were friends of Oliver Cromwell.
The church and rectory were acquired by the same family and by the end of the 18th century most of both villages were owned by the Earls of Heydon.
