URPoint Details
In Anglo-Saxon the name Corfe means ‘a cutting’ or ‘pass’, the village in the Middle Ages had a considerable marble industry, and the engraved work over some of the doorways is usually the work of the Purbeck Marblers.
All the houses are built of the grey Purbeck stone, and many have little dormer windows and tall stone chimneys.
The Church of St Edward the Martyr was restored in 1859, having fallen into ruin during the Civil War, when the lead from the roof was used to make bullets.
