An attractive resort on the Tyne, and near the Roman town of Corstoptium.
St Andrew’s church has a fine Saxon tower and inside a Roman arch. A well preserved Pele (peal) tower stands in the churchyard.
These Border towers date from the 14th century and provided refuge from bands of marauding Scots.
