The attractive village with brick cottages facing the green, has history, artists and authors, personalities and a general air of affluence with its exclusive boutiques, restaurants and inns.
Sometimes known as Spencer Country, Cookham was the home of the painter Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) who used many local scenes as the backdrop to his paintings. His work can be seen at the Stanley Spencer Gallery at the top of the High Street. The famous Royal Swankeeper's Boathouse situated by the Victorian bridge, where the Royal Swankeeper sets off for 'Swan Upping' during the third week in July.
