URPoint Details
Once a mining village it is now a charming tourist area surrounded by spectacular scenery and is an ideal base for scaling the 1635ft Old Man of Coniston the highest peak in this part of the country.
John Ruskin is buried in the parish church and the village museum houses some of his drawings and models.
The disused copper mines a mile away attract many visitors, and care should always be taken when walking in this area as there are many old tunnels and pit-heaps.
