Compton - Church of St Nicholas

The Street, Compton GU3 1EG, England

URPoint Details

The Norman parish Church of St Nicholas has some fine early work and has a two storey chancel. The lower chamber of the chancel dates from the 11th century has a vaulted ceiling and contains an aumbry and piscina. The upper chamber dates from about a century later is above the Norman wood screen, the wood is so hard that it is impossible to drive ordinary nails into it.

The tower probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period as do parts of the nave walls. There is a half buried Norman doorway, while the north and south aisles with their pillars and arches, entrance arches to the tower and chancel, timber nave roof, and aumbry in the Lady Chapel are all 12th century, as is the font.
The spire dating from the 13th century was re-shingled in the 1950s.
