A fortified manor house with curtain wall, built at three periods, 1340, 1450 and 1520, by the Gilbert family. It was the home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539-1583), coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. The family is still in occupation.
