URPoint Details
Another downland village, this time in the North of the District, Compton is the home of the Agricultural Research Station. Older houses still survive in the village whose church, apart from the l3th century tower, was largely rebuilt in 1850. Also in the village is the Downs School, a comprehensive school serving pupils from a wide surrounding area. Of the many downland barrows and earthworks in this area, the most obvious is Pulborough Castle, an Iron Age hillfort of 15 acres with its ramparts well preserved on the North side. Recently, local stables have provided a filming location for the BBC Trainer series.
