The town has a market charter spanning 700 years and was originally known as a prosperous centre for the wool trade.
One of Colne's most famous sons was Wallace Hartley who conducted the band on the ill-fated Titanic. A bust of him stands near the war memorial.
The 13th century Church of St Bartholomew is mostly Perpendicular, and a 16th century roof was uncovered during the 1856 restoration.
