Colmworth

Colmworth , England

URPoint Details

A straggling village spread over some seven miles with many Ends  -  Church, Channel, Roothams Green, Begwary and The City.

A settlement thought to have been founded on the site by the Huguenots.

Colm may have originated in 'calm', meaning clay, an indication of the heavy soil on which the village stands.

Colmworth Methodist Church had an unconventional curate Timothy Richard Matthews who summoned his congregation by blowing a bugle horn.

There are Fieldings buried in the churchyard and connections with Mary Fielding who married Hyrum Smith a founder of the Mormon Church. Hyrum was murdered in 1844 and Mary kept on in the trek to reach Salt Lake City four years later.
