Coleorton , England

URPoint Details

Coleorton Hall was demolished by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War and rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century. The Hall and the yew-sheltered church standing on the hilltop are widely known and the Beaumont family of Coleorton can trace their great family tree back to Norman days. The Beaumonts have been writers, soldiers, judges and artists, and they have helped bring literary and artistic fame to the District.
One Francis Beaumont was the famous collaborator of Fletcher, the Elizabethan dramatist another, Sir George, was the renowned patron of the arts who helped to found the National Gallery in London, and who donated to the country many fine pictures from his own private collection at Coleorton Hall.
Sir Walter Scott, Byron and Southey all visited the great Hall, and Haydon, Wilkie and John Constable stayed and painted here.
The gardens of Coleorton Hall have glorious views across to Charnwood. Here, stone urns and pillars contain inscribed verses by Wordsworth.
The school, the almshouses and the Church of St John were all founded by the Beaumonts, and the endowment they made is administered by the Charity Commissioners.
