On the wooded slopes north of Thatcham is Cold Ash, a popular residential parish that also includes Ashmore Green.
Much of the country is 500 feet above sea level and from the Ridge, which is part of an ancient drovers' route from South Wales to London, fine views can be had across the Kennet Valley.
At one of the highest points stands the church, built in the 1860\'s and opposite this are the modern village school, village hall and playing fields. On the South side of the ridge are the red brick buildings of St. Gabriel\'s Franciscan Convent, and include a prominent tower and a chapel added in the 1930s. To the north of Cold Ash is Downe House, a public school for girls.
