Codford St Mary

Codford St Mary , England

URPoint Details

A small attractive village in the Wylye Valley on the edge of Salisbury Plain joined to the smaller village of Codford St Peter by a single street.
From here a walk on the downs offers magnificent views of the valley and behind both villages the plain sweeps up to the 617ft prehistoric Codford Circle.

The church in Codford St Peter shows traces of Early English and was much restored in the 19th century. Inside is a stone, which stands about 4ft high tapering from the base of about 12inches to about 6 inches at the top and is a remarkable piece of work. A man stands with his head well back, apparently grasping fruit or holding the branch of the tree. In his other hand he holds a hammer.
