Situated at a height of more than 1,300ft on the River Don is the start of the famous Lecht road which crosses the north-eastern Grampians known here as Ladder Hills to which Carn Mor rises to 2,636ft.
This road is part of a military road dating from 1754 and the date is carved on the Well of the Lecht northwest of Cock Bridge.
The road continues together with the Conglass Water down to Tomintoul and later descends still farther to reach the Spey Valley.
To the west stretches the long valley of Glen Avon dominated by Ben Avon rising to 3,843ft at the eastern end of the Cairngorms.
