Discoveries of Bronze Age artefacts a couple of hundred years ago show that Clun is one of the most ancient of settlements.
The town is dominated by the keep of an early 12th century Norman castle built to defend the Welsh borders.
There are some picturesque almshouses and to the west lies Clun Forest.
Manorial status from Norman times until the late 19th century, and silver maces from 1580 and 1614 are preserved.
The Church of St George is a large building with a massive Norman west tower with a double pyramid roof. The Jacobean pulpit has a tester and the altar has a handsome wood canopy.
Pen-y-wern, 1½m southeast are the ruins of an early Bronze Age stone circle crown a 1258ft high hill
