Clophill

Clophill , England

URPoint Details

This pretty village of contrasts has 17th and 18th century cottages and beautiful surrounding countryside.
Clophill means 'stump on the hill' but all that remains on the hill is the derelict St Mary’s 15th century Perpendicular Church.

There have been associations with witchcraft and the notorious occupation of body snatching during Victorian times.

There is an 19th century lock up and pound on the village green near one of the villages oldest pubs the Flying Horse, which has associations with Dick Turpin.

Clophill was renowned for its hat plaiting and a factory was in the High Street. The ladies each day would take their plait to the Flying Horse from where a carrier would take it to Luton to be made into hats.
