Dating back to 1086 when the Norman family of Mortimer’s settled here.
Hugh de Mortimer built a fortress in 1160 which Henry II demolished and only the earthworks near the church can be seen.
A market town where there are many fine examples of half-timbered and 18th century buildings lining a tree shaded street.
The church is interesting in style with Norman to Decorated and has a ‘Piers Plowman’ window, a memorial to William Langland who is said to have been born here.
