Disabled parking by entrance; alternative car park in West End Lane opposite of Portsmouth road. Garden: gravel path, and grassland immediately around the lake firm and flat longer circuits away from lake involves slopes of varying steepness.
One of the earliest surviving English landscape gardens, restored by the Natiional Trust to its former glory. Begun by Sir John Vanbrugh and Charles Bridgeman before 1720, the gardens were extended and naturalised by William Kent.
'Capability' Brown also made improvements. Features include a lake, island with pavilion, grotto, turf amphitheatre, viewpoints and avenues
