Cirencester

Cirencester , England

URPoint Details

Cirencester's heritage is a rich one, as Corinium Dubonnorum, it became the second largest city in Roman Britain, situated at the convergence of the Fosse Way, Ermine Street and Akeman Street.

The Corinium Museum now houses one of the best collections of Roman-British material.

Cirencester Abbey and the Parish Church were both founded in Norman times. Sadly the Abbey was completely demolished following the Dissolution in 1539, but its grounds, with a wildfowl lake and pleasing variety of trees, still form a delightful park in the centre of the town.

The street market, recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, is still a colourful twice-weekly feature of the town's life.
A statue of Father Thames sits at Thames Head and is the reputed source.
