URPoint Details
Once a walled town in Saxon times was one of Alfred’s great strongholds against the marauding Danes.
Nearby are the remains of the Norman castle, and Place Mill mentioned in the Domesday Book still stands on Christchurch Quay.
The town lies between the River Avon and the River Stour and where they meet flows out into Christchurch harbour.
The village as it was then was first mentioned in the Domesday Book when there were 21 houses and 24 canons attached to the church.
The two-arched bridge over the River Avon is Norman, and the old priory mill still stands.
