Ethelred the Unready founded an abbey here in 986 which, was later destroyed by the invading Danes.
St Mary’s is a large and beautiful building with fine Norman work. The central tower is believed to be part of the abbey and may date back to Anglo-Saxon times. The chancel was lengthened in the 13th century and the tower raised some time later.
Agatha Christie is buried in the churchyard her tomb is much visited and her old home is also in the parish.
To the north of the village lie the church and Manor Farm.
