A market town since the 14th century still has one of the biggest cattle markets in England.
One of the town’s oldest buildings is Yelde Hall in St Mary’s Street which dates back to the 15th century.
King Alfred much of his time here and used to hunt in the nearby forests.
Hardenhuish pronounced Harnish is now a suburb and on a hill stands the church designed in 1779 by John Wood of Bath and is a delightful Georgian church with two fine Venetian windows.
