Set within a beautiful medieval fortress in romantic grounds with formal gardens, woodland walk and lake, the Castle was at first a 12th century stronghold, and in the 13th century the Grey family took the then single tower by assault
Henry III stayed in the castle in 1255, and Edward I based himself here in 1298. In 1344, Sir Thomas Grey was granted Royal Licence to fortify the castle, and the work was completed by 1348. In the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), there were further additions made and again in 1752. In 1803, the upper part of the east wing was rebuilt and in 1828, two handsome marble chimney pieces were introduced to the Great Hall. In 1873, an extensive service wing was built as a romantic addition to the east side of the castle.
There are some castle records dating back to 1540 and there are many original features worthy of inspection. The castle is open May to end September noon till 5pm (closed Tuesdays). It also has a museum, tearoom, gift shop and a torture chamber with dungeons.
