The Market Cross is described as one of the finest of its type in the country and dates from the 15th century and was a gift to the city by Edward Story, Bishop of Chichester from 1478 to 1503 and is often referred to as Bishop Story’s Cross. It is an open-arcaded structure of Caen stone, with a massive pillar from which spring flying buttresses. It is topped by an octagonal stone cupola rising to 50ft.
