Chichester - Church of St John the Evangelist
St Johns St., Chichester , England
URPoint Details
St John the Evangelist Church (Churches Conservation Trust) was designed by James Elmes and built in 1812, is a severely elegant stretched octagon of pale brick and, inside, a very rare and almost unaltered example of an early 19th century evangelical ‘preaching house’. An impressive central pulpit, with reading desk and clerk’s desk, almost hides the simple Communion Table, and is tall enough for the preacher to see each one of his flock below or in the galleries surrounding him on all four sides.
The church is a Grade I Listed building.
