Cheviot Hills

Cheviot Hills , England

URPoint Details

A lonely range of grassy hills, forming the border between England and Scotland for much of its length.
The highest point is the boggy, flat-topped Cheviot rising to 2,676ft, which is best ascended from Wooler or Kirknewton.

North of the Cheviot is the picturesque College Valley, and to the east is the attractive Harthope Valley.

Flocks of black-faced Cheviot sheep graze on many of the slopes.

The main road from Newcastle to Jedburgh crosses the hills, reaching a height of 1,371ft at Carter Bar, from where a magnificent view over the Scottish Lowlands.

The country between the Cheviots and the Roman Wall forms part of the boundary of the Northumberland National Park.

Carter Bar at a height of 1,371ft forms the border between England and Scotland, and a fine viewpoint on the Newcastle to Jedburgh road. The approach from the south is through the lonely Rede Valley and past the Catcleugh reservoir.
To east, along the Cheviot ridge, is the Roman Camp of Chew Green, on the line of Agricolaメs Dere Street.
