Chesterfield - Church of St Mary and All Saints

Church Way, Chesterfield S40 1XJ, England

URPoint Details

Trips up to the tower are available, but not suitable for those with mobility problems. Wheelchair access to the church.

The largest church in Derbyshire with its crooked spire leaning over 9ft. St Mary and All Saints'. You can't miss seeing the Spire standing on the skyline like a question mark.
How did it happen? Answers are easy to come by - some blame the Devil, some say lightning, one 'expert' even blamed bell ringing! But the truth is a little harder to find. Perhaps too much green timber was used. There isn't any cross bracing. And don't forget the weight of those lead tiles, which cover the wooden Spire - all 32 tons of them! Call in at the Museum to find out how the Spire was built.
