In the 1st AD the Romans arrived and is one of the oldest towns in Britain. When the Legions left in the 5th century it was not until 883 that the monks from Lindisfarne built a shrine to St Cuthbert and the town started to flourish again.
St Cuthbert’s remains were moved to Durham over one hundred years later.

The town was busy in the Middle Ages as a stopping post on the Great North Road.
