URPoint Details
Old Stone Bridge built in 1787 crosses the River Can at the bottom of the High Street and is the third built here since 1199. Maurice, Bishop of London, a local landowner foresaw the importance of Chelmsford once the river was bridged. Apparently during the 17th century plague an armed guard was placed on the bridge to prevent Moulsham villagers from bringing infected corpses for burial in the parish churchyard!
