The impressive church of St Mary, St Peter and St Cedd was the parish church of Chelmsford until 1914 when the Diocese of Chelmsford was formed.
It is probable that previously a Saxon church stood on the site of the Cathedral, which was built around 1420 and had a 15th century tower and spire added in 1749.
Features of particular interest inside the Cathedral include a bronze statue by Georg Ehrlich called 'The Bombed Child' or 'Pieta', the Mildmay family monument, various tapestries and embroidered kneelers which form jewels of colour on the limestone floor.
