First established by Queen Elizabeth I as a naval base and many famous hips were built here for the Spanish Armada in 1588. In the 17th century Charles I expanded the dockyard and it became a strong military defence after the Dutch towed away the pride of his fleet ‘the Royal Charles’.
It was here in Chatham that Horatio Nelson as a boy of 12 years old embarked on his naval career.
