Charles Lamb born 10 February 1775 was an English essayist best known for his 'Essays of Elia' written between 1820 and 1822.  He penned John Woodvil, a poetic drama in 1802. He also wrote that 'Lawyers, I suppose, were children once'. This quotation appears in the preface of 'To Kill a Mocking Bird'. Another quote is 'Man is a gaming animal'.

He must always be trying to get the better in something or other.' features in the Essays of Elia in 1823. 

He died 27 December 1834, in Edmonton, London aged 59 years.
