He was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 24 September 1806 to 25 March 1807 during George III's reign.

In 1830, the Whigs returned to power, with Grey as Prime Minister. His Ministry was a notable one, seeing passage of the Reform Act of 1832 which finally saw the reform of the House of Commons, and the abolition of slavery in 1833
